I believe that Digital Fortress was one of Dan Brown’s initial novels, published before the world was introduced to the coolest Professor on the block- Robert Langdon. However, I read this book much after reading the first four books of the Robert Langdon series. Thus, I went into the novel expecting and anticipating the genius suspense telling that is the trade mark of Dan Brown. And thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.
Although there is no parallel to the mystery that this man can build using historical, linguistic and conspiracy theory references, Digital Fortress and Deception Point prove that Dan Brown can write an engaging suspense thriller on pretty much any topic.
As the title suggests, this time a certain language professor and Ms. Beauty with top notch brains (the character sketches who are typical leads of any Dan Brown novel) find themselves in a technological crisis. And boy, has Dan Brown done his homework ad research. I don’t know if technology is of any interest of the author or if he had any prior expertise in the subject, but the details…they suck you right in. I feel that’s what makes his novels such master pieces. You will not just find your heart racing alongside the hero in the chase scenes, you will be intellectually stimulated right in the middle of this thrill with intriguing trivia dropped in very casually.
And for those who, like me, love Dan Brown books for the mystique that this man builds around historical monuments and religious institutions, you won’t be disappointed either. The story keeps you travelling between high tech settings with yards of winding cable and finger print detectors and computer programmes, to the old world cobble streets, Catholic churches and long lost monuments.
Over all, if you have read even a single Dan Brown novel, you know what you are signing up for when you pick this one up. If you haven’t read a Dan Brown novel, what the hell are you doing???
Caution: make sure you don’t read this book when you cannot afford sleepless nights or days spent just reading a book. Once you start reading, chances are good that you won’t be able to keep the book down before you have turned the last page.
