What attracted me to this book is an interesting fact. I had read the Lara Jean Series by Jenny Han and I truly loved it. Then I read The List by Siobhan Vivian and while I was going through other books written by her, I stumbled upon this which she co co-authored with her best friend, none other than Jenny Han. Can you believe it? Two authors, I liked books written by each, so reading one written by both together was a definite yes.
It’s a series of three books which run in a sequence and revolve around the lives of a bunch of high schoolers. Mainly it is about these three girls, all with unique lifestyles and a variety of personalities, who come together to take revenge from the people who have wronged each one of them in some way. In the beginning, their quest for revenge is basically pulling a few pranks which would embarrass the person in question but soon their innocent pranks start having not so innocent consequences.
What I liked about the series? Because the story is spread over three volumes, it actually allows each character to show both their black and white sides. I mean, isn’t that how real people are? Shades of grey. The readers as a result go through a whole roller coaster ride in which they hate a character at one point and at a later point feel, “Ummm….may be ‘hate’ is too strong a word”. That just provides a little more realness to the characters.
Also, the story line comes with a little twist! And it is that DHA! DHA! DHA! Kind of a twist. And the writers have surely blended a ‘not so typical high school, teenage fiction novel idea’ into the plot quite well. It reveals itself in sneaks and peaks throughout until finally it totally blows your mind out.
My only complaint is that when they maintained such a good pace throughout the series, why the hell was the ending rushed up and wrapped up so quickly? I mean, a lot happens in the epilogue but while the whole series gratifies each curiosity of the reader, the epilogue leaves you feeling “what? How the hell did he or she end up this way?” Surely someone who spared the time to read all three books wouldn’t have minded reading a few more pages.
Over all, it’s a good companion to have while you are going about your normal life. It provides that perfect amount of drama, feeds your imagination with pretty, stylish high school gals and sweet and hunky teen age boys, and adds just a pinch of mystique to your simple, everyday life.
