The Ship of Brides

book cover: the ship of brides

It’s rare to come across a story that is so unique that it is difficult to fit it in any of the discreet genres. It is even more difficult to pin point at exactly what you liked about the book.

This one fits this description exactly.

This is the kind of book where you dive in without knowing much about what you are signing up for. And it should be approached that way.

Set in the post-World War II years, when the entire world was rebuilding itself, this book addresses the most peculiar kind of reconstruction: that of marriages. Australian brides of British soldiers who got married amidst the pathos of the war, are finally on their way to their husbands with hopes of a blissful life. the voyage however isn’t just a means to travel, it ends up becoming a story in itself.

This novel brings to life the saying that the journey is much more important than the destination.

With a host of characters coming from all walks of life, with histories and desires as distinct as black and white, this book captures you in the emotional drama that unfolds on the sea. The contrast between the prim and delicate brides and the stern and sturdy machines and protocols of a navy ship, makes for an interesting backdrop.

If you ever wondered what would happen if the most feminine of females, and the most masculine of males were stranded on an island together, look no further. Mars and Venus collide quite strongly on the turbulent waters of the Indian ocean in this novel. And the period in which the story is set just adds to the amazement. In an age when couples are obsessed with knowing the slightest of details of each other’s routine, it is intriguing to digest how entire marriages were ended over a four word long postcard.

Over all, a definite recommend to all those people who love to read that random fiction novel. The book will capture your attention in the first chapter, keep you going on a steady rhythm throughout and tease you with just the right amount of suspense at the end.
