I must say. When I first heard about this book, I was a little hesitant to pick this one up. I have never really read a homosexual love story and I didn’t know if I would be able to identify with the emotion enough to like the story.
But, I was pleasantly surprised. I guess, if you are heterosexual and like me, you are unsure about whether you’d like man to man romance, this novel is a really good starting point.
Very frankly, I don’t know whether to attribute the credit to the writing skill of the author or to the flexibility of the mind, but it was so organic and beautiful that for not a single moment did I find it difficult to identify with the characters. I mean if we can empathize with mutants and wizards, replacing a man for a woman in a love story is not that out of the box. Love is love, after all…
The story revolves around this character of Monty, who is a story in himself. Set in the 18th century Europe, Monty and his love interest cum best friend- Percy, along with Monty’s sister, venture on a tour which soon turns into an adventure.
I’ve always had a soft spot for ‘two friends falling in love’ romances. and this one, is the best I’ve read so far.
The charm of Monty leaps off the pages and grabs the reader’s attention from the very first sentence.
I must point out, I read this one on Audible and the narrator has done a fabulous job of portraying Monty. In fact, it is the narrator who attracted me to this book. It has been narrated by Christian Coulson, the guy who played Tom Riddle in the Harry Potter movies.
The line of events are interesting but towards the end, they start becoming a little unlinked and extreme. But with each new character that is introduced, you get another reason to keep going on. And trust me, you just want to see how would the flamboyant Lord charm his way out of the over the top troubles that he attracts.
Over all, a definite listen to. I truly recommend the audio book. It’s a light and fun read, without getting predictable.
