At times random reads turn out to be surprisingly good. At times audio books elevate the level of an average story. Unfortunately neither of these happened for me in the case of this novel.
I don’t even remember how I came to know about this novel. Perhaps it might have been in the recommendation list of some audiobook app. And although I don’t read all books recommended to me, the plot of this one definitely sounded promising. Anyone who has read and like the Bride Quartet series by Nora Roberts would agree with me that there is something magical about love stories that happen against the backdrop of weddings. Somehow, the chaos of behind the scenes of weddings seems as interesting as the wedding itself. The dresses, the decorations, the drama, all makes up a treat for the imagination. And thus I chose to read this book.
However, too much detail often digresses the reader from the emotion at hand. And I feel that this is what happened with this book. The author hasn’t left anything to the reader’s imagination. Each cut of each dress, each flower of each wreath, and each dish of the menu has been described in great detail. That makes the reading seem somewhat childish.
To top it all, the audiobook has been red by a voice that sounds like a 60 year old librarian. it is perfectly suited to the characters from London’s polished society, but feels a bit out of place for the rustic male characters and the messy, millennial female characters.
Overall, I would recommend this book to slightly younger readers who are just beginning their reading journey. It isn’t young adult but I feel many YA books dive a lot deeper than this one.
